Sri Lankan Traditional Medicine
& Kottayawatta Vedaparapura

Every nation has their own traditional system of medicine. Each Traditional medical system develops collaborating with the nature, culture and spiritual values of that nation. As Indians has Ayurveda as their traditional medical system, Sri Lankans has their own Sri Lankan Traditional Medicine (SLTM) (Hela vedakama) which has a golden history runs back to the pre historical period. Pulasthi rishi, the grandfather of Great king Ravana is believed as the founder of SLTM. According to Ayurveda texts Pulasthi rishi has represented Sri Lanka in initial conference of Ayurveda held on verge of the Himalaya mountains.

Sri Lankan Traditional Medicine (SLTM) is a well-developed medical system. This knowledge has been transferred from generation to generation based on a series of prescriptions written on ola-leaf manuscripts. Ayurveda and SLTM have subtle differences. They share similar techniques in diagnosis and treatment methods. Both Ayurveda and SLTM use natural ingredients (herbal as well as mineral) in their medicines. STLM however is more blended with Buddhist culture and in some aspects goes deeper into therapeutic entities that Indian Ayurveda fails to address.

Kottayawatta medical linage is a well-known traditional medical linage in Sri Lanka originate in Hulugalla- Nikaweratiya, North western province in Sri Lanka. History of Kottayawaththa wedaparapura begins with a great physician who has treated to the Arhath Maliyadeva thero. According to Mahawansha, Arhath Maliyadewa thero suffered from an abdominal disease and came to the village of Sulugulla (Hulugalla in present) looking for a treatment for his illness. ‘Suluguluwaidya’, made a porridge using 10 herbs and offered it to Arhath Maliyadeva which completely healed him.

According to folks king Ravana used to visit village Nikaweratiya to pick Vertex nigundo (‘Nika’ in Sinhalese language) for his medical preparations. Indian epic Ramayana describes the prosperity and the wisdom of Great King Ravana. He had an airplane, which used mercury as fuel. He was known as Dasis Rawana, which means who has 10 heads (because he has governed 10 areas of India). He was a great emperor as well as a great physician. Ravana’s era was the golden era of SLTM. “Kumara thantraya, Arka prakashaya, Nadi prakashaya, Udis thantraya” are some books he has written down his medical knowledge. Arka prakashaya includes one thousand stanzas describe different herbal infusions for different diseases. Kottayawatta medical handbook which has come through 22 generations, include a similar herbal infusion which shows fantastic effects on several sever diseases.
